Surgery for Max

Thursday of this week some of us took a little road trip to Tucson.

Max needed some surgery to take off a fatty tumor on his shoulder and Sally talked to a dermatologist friend of hers and they decided to do it as an outpatient surgery. They wanted him to stay overnight in Tucson in case of any complications. Steve is always up for a road trip and offered to drive him (because Max was not to drive after the surgery). Steve wanted me to go with him and we thought we should tell Peg, and she was on also.

So Max was called back and the nurse asked "Do you have anyone with you?" and Max says "Yes my three sister and brother-in-law!"

They moved us to a different waiting room and we started waiting.

This is what we did while we waited.

I finished this Redwork I have been working on for years.

Peg worked on this block for her apron quilt.

Sally worked on her hexagon blocks.

Steve took a nap.
Max (after surgery) waiting for a prescription to be filled for pain.

The Suns were playing that night and the Men watched the game while the Women worked on a project Peg brought "Craft Aprons".

Max did better than we thought and we headed home the next morning.

On our way out we got to go to our "One Token Quilt Store"

Saturday morning we get a phone call from Cole that Kelly had gone to the hospital in the middle of the night and Khloe was here!

Kelly woke in the night and was feeling sick (chills and fever) and that started her contractions.

They left for the hospital at about 2:30.

When the babies heart rate started dropping they rushed her to do a c-section.

Khloe 4:04 AM 6 lb9 oz.

It was early in the morning so I sent a text to her sisters (and sister-in laws) and brothers that Kelly's baby was here. Amy was one that called back immediately.

She said she wasn't sleeping anyway.

Kelly was doing the food for a Stake Cub Scout Day Camp Saturday and all the food was at her house.

She as supposed to make subs with her Dad that morning. Kim said she would help with the Subs and Amy said "I might as well, what else am I doing".

They finished the subs and I took the other food to the church and woke up the Beecher Kids to the news of the new sister.

I was coming home from hospital about 9:00 when Amy calls and says she is on the way to the hospital and I was surprized she was going to visit Kelly so soon and she said

"My water just broke, I'm on my way!!!!"

The rest of the day was a blur for all of us but about 7:30 we get the word that

Jade Rooklyn was here!

@6:59 7 lb13 oz 20.5 inches long.

It was a long day with the whole family helping out where needed. Even Cute big sister Emily turned into a little mom and took over with things that needed to be done for her mom and the kids.

I love my family and it was so fitting the next day was Mother's Day

We had a real "Mother Fest" all day and I loved it.

Kim told the Jr.High she would chaperon on the buss for Grant and McKay's choir when she found out about James's Mother's Day Program at school. Kim asked me to be her stand in Mom for James.

They showered the Mom's and a few Grandma's with a very clever program, muffins and strawberries and flowers.

What a great teacher!

It was so fun to spend some time with James.

A Little Surgery for Steve

Durning a routine check-up the Doctor found a spot on Steve's face he wanted to test. It was found to be skin Cancer and Steve went for a out patient surgery on the 26, of April.

He was in some pain but every day it looks better.

Make sure to have those spots checked!

We took a short trip to the Gila Valley to tour the New Temple. My parents were raised in the Gila Valley and Steve played Football at Eastern Jr. College and it was fun to see how things have changed over the years.

First Stop was Taylor Freeze and the Quilt Store.

Andy and Joni and some of Joni's family were going also and we all made arrangements

stayed at the Springhill Suites in Thatcher, Very Nice!

Seth wanted to set by Grandpa at dinner and talked the entire time.

Sister's Trip

We had a little different Sister's trip this year. We two of the girls are having babies in May and they were pushing to go in April. We found that April was full of things happening so we missed some of our group. Laura was going to hear Sarah's All-State Concert in Flag and Joni had a Stake Camp Meeting She was in charge of.

We didn't go very far. We stayed at the Hyatt Place behind Cinemark

The Hotel drove us to Chilli's we had dinner and walked to the movie and walked back to the hotel.

We started at Old Navy and Last Chance and had

My one token Quilt Store and didn't find anything I needed this trip. So Sad!

The day we left Nate came down with Appendicitis and had his Appendix out Friday night late.

Saturday morning we went to see him in the hospital. He was already feeling better.

Laura Stayed with Nate and Steve went with Brent and Becca and Jake drove to Flagstaff to hear Sarah sing in the All-State Choir Concert. Steve said it was awesome!

Baby Shower for Amy and Baby "Jade"

The girls in the family gave Amy a Baby Shower.

We are all so happy for Amy!

Lot's of Family and Friends came to wish her well and shower her with so many cute girl things.

Amy found this dress pattern on line here and we picked out the fabric and I finished it in time for the shower.

It has become tradition (the past few years)that Grandma make a quilt for the new grandchild.

Kelly was the Host of the party and she is having a baby due the same week as Amy.

43rd Anniversary-Catalina Island

Oh yes it has been 43 years.

We both said we were up for another 43.

We took a little road trip to New Port Beach.

It was a very relaxing trip.

On the 23rd our actual Anniversary we took a boat trip to Catalina Island.

We rented a Golf Cart and drove around the Island.

This is at the top of the Island.

Right after this picture was taken my camera fell out of my pocket and the next time I went to take a picture it was gone. We had to drive around the Island (one way road) and try to find it.

This kind man saw us drive past where he was working and caught up with us and returned our camera.

He had found it on the road and had no way of finding the owner.

I was so happy I asked him if I could take his picture.

Steve has wanted to have a Shrimp/Crab Boil for a long time. Our Anniversery is Tuesday and he wanted to invite the Kids for a "Shrimp Boil"

It starts with a "Big Pot"

Then you add seasoning, potatoes, corn, onions and finally the Shrimp at the last.

You have to time each thing you add so they will all finish cooking at the same time.

Jake's turned 10 on Saturday and it just happened to be the same time the Beecher's parents were out of town. The kids were supposed to stay with Grandpa and Grandma but as it always happens they end up at Brent and Laura's.

Laura makes it so fun that they all want to be at her house.

Even Kate got to spend the night Friday night.

They had Donuts for breakfast, hair-do's for the girls, Krazy Sub for lunch at the park,

bowling, dollar store game, pizza and cake for dinner.

One of my Goals for 2010 is to do something in the "Cultural Arts" each month

My sister Sally and I were able to get some tickets from some of Peg's friends that couldn't go and we were asked to tag along with the great group of Ladies

That was one of my goals I completed in February, another is center block for Quilts with a Spin.

I got a good start but a long way to go.

Way more work that I thought but I love it!

Others like to make it from a box cake mix.

So we had a taste test.

OK this year everyone was trying to find a Summer Musical Program for their kids this summer. Well we have some amazing talent in our family and grand kids that love to sing. So we decided to have out own. I came up with the music and the girls all helped out. We took turns every Friday hosting at each house. We missed a few weeks when some families were out of town. We tried to find a place to have our performance and the Grand kids suggested Grandpa's Krazy Sub on Sunday night (we are not open on Sunday) I think some were thinking of the pop and Ice Cream machine.

Adam was our sound man.

Our audience was not as big as the cast.

This is the group With Sarah on the keyboard and Macey running around to the music. All 21 grand kids. Only one mission(Brendan on a mission) Can you believe ages 17 to 2 years old. A great group of Grand kids that love to sing.

Sarah played for our first song. "The Young Entertainers" A song the Krummenacher parents sang when they were their age.

Halle Meets Beauty

Halle and her cute friend Anne Thursday was Halle's 6Th Birthday and we were trying to find a time we could take her a Birthday treat. They were going to "Beauty and the Beast" at the Hale Theater. We decided that afternoon to see if they still had tickets and they happened to have two on the front row. We were able to wish Halle a Happy Birthday and also see a "great" show.

We tried to get a picture of Halle with Belle and Halle was so shy.

Some of Sarah's friends gave her a surprise party for her 16Th birthday. Her Dad made the sub and homemade root beer. Her Mom did a lot of work behind the scenes (as always).

This year we went to La Jolla Ca. We were all ready for a little time together. Some More than others. We always bring a prize for each other and this is what I made for the girls.

Father's Day all the family came over and Rebecca and Emily wanted to make it more of a party for the Dad's.

They out together some hair kits (ponytail holders, ribbons, hair clip etc.)
The Dad's had to do the hair of one of their girls. We had a vote and I cannot remember the winners.

Pickle Bucket Garden

I have been thinking we need to do some kind of a garden. I told Steve we needed to get some containers so we could plant a patio garden.

He said why not use the empty pickle buckets from the shop.

We drilled holes in the bottom and we filled them up with potting soil and planted plants already started. So far I have harvested two tomatoes, 4 grape tomatoes and 4 banana peppers and 1 bell pepper. Not what we call a bumper crop but it is a start.

Sunday Night Challenge

Back in the day this is how Mom made her bread. 10 pounds flour, 3/4 gallon of water etc...She made bread this way every week until she got her new Bosch.
Amy and Lisa have new bread makers and it is now a "challenge". The family is now trying to find the best Whole Wheat Bread Recipe.

Sunday 4 different recipes were tried. All were good but they are still making changes to make the best loaf of bread.

It was fun and we added some chili and we had Dinner.

It was great!

Sunday Night Fun "Flip Flop and Pillows"

I was working on a project tonight and the Granddaughters wanted to make something also.

I had some flip flops and fabric left from a Humanitarian project and just enough for the girls that were over Sunday Night.

So we got started!

Dollar Store Flip Flops and 1 inch X 6 inch fabric strips. Tie each strip in a square knot and you get these cute Flips

The Girls were about half way finish with our project when the boys wanted to make something.
I went into my Sewing room and found some boys sports fabric and we were first going to make cubes. That would take longer than one night so they decided to make mini pillows. They stitched three sides of a 5 inch square and I reinforced them on the machine.
They turned them and then stuffed with batting and stitched up the end.
This is what they got.

Not to bad for a Sunday Night activity with Cousins.

Pickle Bucket Garden

I wanted to plant a garden this year and I don't have good luck with preparing the soil so I decided to do a container garden. It was suggested that I use the buckets the pickles come in at work. We drilled hole in the bottom and added potting soil and so far so good.

Memories of MOM

Bread - Mom baked bread on Saturdays. She used a bowl about this big and a gallon jug filled about 2/3 with warm water then the yeast was added powdered milk honey salt and oil. In the bowl would be a ten pound bag of flour and we made a well and poured in the ... The result was heavenly. It yielded 10 loaves.
We very rarely ate all 10 loaves of bread. Mom would send me or Spence or Max with a loaf still warm and in a brown paper sack to the neighbor with the new baby, to brother so and so for his kindness and checking up on the boys, to Brother Hilton, our home teacher, to the guy on the ball team that hit a home run or to the guy on the ball team that didn’t hit the home run. We watched her feed hungry stomachs and nourish hungry hearts. She taught service and sharing one another’s burdens by example. John 6:35 “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life; he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth in me shall never thirst.” She taught us her love of the Savior or the Bread Of Life with a simple loaf of bread.

Love - Mother was a great friend. She was very close to her sisters and they were best friends. Mom had friends wherever she went. It was because she loved people. She engaged in conversation easily and knew how to put people at ease. It was amazing to me. Her sister Helen once said that she loved being with mom because that’s where the fun was. everyone wanted to be with my mother Norma, you could feel her love when you were near. Ye are my disciples if ye have love one to another, John 13: 35. Mosiah 4:15: “Ye will teach [children] to walk in the ways of truth and soberness; ye will teach them to love one another, and to serve one another.”

Prayer- I never knew anyone who prayed like my mom. It was inspirational. We knew Mom said her prayers because every night she knelt by her bed the very same way with a space big enough for Dad next to her. She was asked by one of her new daughter in laws how she managed to get through losing her husband and she responded, Well I spent a lot ot time on my knees. I can remember morning and evening prayers as a family growing up. Mom’s prayers were memorable. She prayed for everybody and everything. You knew who was having difficulties by who got prayed for. A few weeks before mom’s passing she had a night where she said her prayers and then couldn’t get up off her knees and spent the night there. The next evening I asked her if she would say her prayers sitting on the edge of her bed this time. Mom agreed and proceeded to pray for everyone she knew. She prayed for each of her children and their family concerns. She prayed for her brothers and sisters and their families. She prayed for her Bishop and Bishopric, for the leaders of the church, The Prophet for her stake president for missionaries throughout the church and for her grandson’s serving at the time, for the youth of the church. For members of her ward, for government leaders. At the end of the prayer Mom asked Me if there was anyone she had left out. I assured her there wasn’t. Sweet memory to me. Someone once gave Mom some unsolicited advice on raising one of her children and she responded confidently that she was praying to know how to raise that child and that she was likely to be the one to get the inspiration. Mom also acknowledged when her prayers were answered by thanking Heavenly Father often. Prayer is the souls sincere desire, Uttered or unexpressed

Music - Mom taught herself to play the piano on a cardboard keyboard on the kitchen table. She took her first official piano lesson when she was in High School. Mr. Santee the music teacher @ Duncan High School taught Mom to read music and understand how notes and chords and rhythms all went together. Her piano served her well and others. It was a great source of comfort to her. Many night s when struggling with her family alone, mom would get up and play the piano, mostly show tunes. Could be where I got the love of show tunes. If she was frustrated she might start with Give me some men who are stout hearted men and finish with something mellow like some enchanted evening. I bonded with mom during these times and often sat at the piano and sang as she played. She loved to sing and sang harmony with her friends and sisters. She loved Harmony. All of us took piano lessons and then learned other instruments, I think we counted 13 different ones if you count the accordion and all the ukuleles. Nothing made mom happier that to have her kids around her playing and singing in harmony to tunes like the Crawdad song or That good ‘old Mountain Dew! She taught piano for over 40 years. Her last recital was two months before she passed away.
We had a family hymns that was called to serve and before it was not appropriate for families to participate in “farewell” our family would sing that song at the farewells of the missionaries in our family. The Gale family’s hymn is Love at Home and we were raised to know that song by heart. I have a personal love of that hymn. After dad passed away, I was young and felt that dad was watching from on high so I said Oh there’s two who smile on high. Then after mom passed away it was three.
Mom loved Music and loved us to sing in harmony. But more than singing in harmony she wanted us to live in Harmony. She wanted harmony in the home. She wanted harmony in the ward. She wanted Harmony in the world. The kind we sing and the kind we live.

We were at church and I looked at my phone and Adam had called and when I called him back he said "Mom the sink fell" I said, "What sink?" and he said, "The one in the kitchen".

We had the kitchen remodeled almost two years ago the counter tops and the sink were put in new then.

Long story short Sunday night when all the family was here, I wish I had a dollar for every time I had to say. "Don't turn on the water". It is always something!

What Happened to Matching Easter Dresses?

Back in the day, everyone had to match. Even if you weren't happy about it, like Brent.

This is my first Easter I could sew for Brent and Kim, yes I made Brent's outfit.

Make your own pizza. Spence had 10 Dutch Ovens and hot coals and the crust, cheese and sauce.

We started with our 2nd annual Turkey (chicken) Trot.
